FORGING 6061

Why forge 6061 instead of machining it

6061 is hot-forged and then solution-treated and aged to T6. Closed-die forging compresses the grain structure and aligns it with the part’s load path, so forged 6061-T6 carries higher fatigue loads than the same shape cut from plate or bar.

  • Chemistry: Al balance · Mg 0.8–1.2% · Si 0.4–0.8% · Cu 0.15–0.4% · Cr 0.04–0.35%
  • Press forging range: 300–2500T at XPF
  • Heat treatment: solution + artificial ageing to T6, per batch certificate
  • Machining: excellent; welding possible with strength loss in the weld zone

Typical 6061 forged applications at XPF

Bicycle drivetrain

Cranksets, chainring spiders, seatpost heads — forged 6061-T6 is the industry baseline for loaded drivetrain parts.

Adaptive & therapy components

Crank interfaces, clamps and brackets where predictable fatigue behaviour matters.

Industrial structural parts

Brackets, arms and housings where anodised corrosion resistance is required.

FAQ

6061 questions we get from buyers

Is 6061-T6 strong enough for structural bike parts?

Yes — 310 MPa tensile with good elongation is why it is the default forged alloy for cranksets and frames parts worldwide. For extreme strength-to-weight, we also forge 7075-T6.

6061 or 6082 for European programs?

Both forge well. 6082 has slightly higher strength and is the common EN designation in Europe; we forge whichever your drawing specifies.

Does welding 6061 reduce strength?

Welding is possible but softens the heat-affected zone. For load-path joints we recommend forged one-piece designs instead of welded assemblies.

Do you supply mill certificates?

Every batch ships with a mill certificate traceable to the ingot lot.

Which file formats can I send?

STEP, STP, DWG, DXF and PDF — even a clear photo of a print works for a first feasibility opinion.

Do you sign NDAs?

Yes. Tooling and dies are designed and built in-house, so your drawings never travel to a third-party die shop.

What press sizes do you run?

Closed-die forging presses from 300T to 2500T, covering small components up to large structural parts.

What anodising finishes are available?

Type II and Type III (hard) anodising in black, natural and colour finishes, plus sandblasting before anodising for a uniform matte look.

Do you support prototypes and small batches?

Yes — batches are quoted per part number depending on size and die amortisation, and prototypes are possible.

How fast do you reply to a drawing?

Most drawings receive a feasibility opinion and cost range within 3 working days.

Need 6061 parts forged to your drawing?

Feasibility opinion and cost range in 3 working days.
